[A lot had to happen in the few days after their return. Injured orbers needed stabilizing and the doctors at work needed gofers to wash linens and fetch stock. These were tasks Finn occupied himself with in totality those first 48 hours back aboard the Ximilia. There were moments of quiet scattered in-between -- a much needed shower, a couple quick naps -- but Finn avoids them as a rule. With the adrenaline of the fight still pumping through him in fits an starts, moments of quiet could be dangerous.
Case in point, it is in one of those moments of quiet (laying awake, trying to sleep) that Finn remembers with guilty suddenness that he hadn't texted Ziggy once since they got back.
The message comes through after midnight; a sure fire sign of someone being Normal On Main.]
Ziggy, hey! I keep meaning to send you a brain-text and then I keep forgetting like an idiot. Are you okay? How's your back?
[It's okay, buddy. Life is complicated, and Ziggy's somewhat aware that Finn's had it a little rough. What with the whole... betrayal of someone heroic and all of that, and the big fight that had ensued. Honestly, it was way cleaner a retrieval than they've had in the past, but that didn't make it any less mentally taxing. She's busied herself lying around and feeling stiff and sore like she's just been in a car crash when she gets that text.]
Wow, brain-text sounds extra weird, when you put it that way.
But don't worry about it, I'm used to dealing with post-mission stuff. I'm still alive, shockingly. Mostly been stealing bags of peas out of the freezer for my back until it doesn't feel like someone's thrown me off a roof.
I guess being young doesn't always mean you're quick on recovery.
[ Finn sits up out of bed, leg jiggling with unspent energy as he read over the text a second time. And a third. ]
And listen, Dr. McCoy could give you a cortisone shot or something. I'm kinda helping him out lately, I could probably help you skip the wait. [ Is he trying to sound a little impressive? Maybe. Whatever it is, Finn's not fully conscious of it. ] I know it's boring as heck going to the infirmary when you're not like, actively bleeding out.
Aw. Nice of you to offer, but I've got this under control.
[There's no Nurse Lane to mother her into getting medical help when she gets hurt, and considering what had happened back home... maybe an omen not to be anywhere near a nurse's office these days.]
I'll leave the infirmary for people who need it more than me A lot of people got their asses royally kicked, to put it lightly. I'm mostly just laying around watching Disney original movies. You ever watch any?
[Finn wants to protest, but there was a line so easily crossed with pushiness. One that he was crossing... kind of a lot, lately. Hard as it is, he decides to trust her on this one. Ziggy knew how to handle herself, Finn saw that first hand.]
Oh word. That sounds pretty fun, I like original movies lol what's a Disney?
It's a company that mostly makes cartoons, but sometimes they make other stuff with real actors, too. These all came out, like, WAY after I was born. If everything here goes well so I can actually make it to my 40's, I'll be way too old to enjoy them.
Luckily, we can enjoy them here and now.
I've got some on this funky... future... thing. They call them iPads, I think? If you want to watch sometime.
[From the opposite, far-flung end of the time spectrum, Finn recognizes a few key words he knows mean entertainment. It made him think of well-loved VHS tapes in bright white clamshell boxes with drawings on the front. They reminded Finn of oysters; once you pried open the fused plastic, you'd sometimes find a pearl.
... Usually you just found a busted tape, though. Those ones in the white clamshells, they were always busted.]
Welllll.... I'm not doing anything right now? I know it's kinda late tho, so don't sweat it if you just wanna crash.
I've got nothing better to do than lay around, and that's all you've got to do when you're watching a movie. You wanna crash in the community room? They've got that nice couch in there.
I'd invite you into my room but it's, like... totally boring.
[Also the idea of having a boy in her room is so utterly scandalous, even to her.]
Besides, we're in space. Is there any such thing as being too late when there's no official sun or moon?
[Trust, the idea of going to her room was pretty scandalous to him, too. He'd only done that with a two girls, and Jake had been there chaperoning for one of them. The other time was just... weird.
Common room sounds great to him.]
Oh heck yes. I know that couch. I'll grab some snacks from the kitchen, what do you like?

I'll bring the blankets and pillows.
If there are any boring adults around, we'll kick them out.
[It's foolproof.]
